Former Farmington Council Person Runs in Farmington Hills

Valerie Knol says her experience in Farmington and as a state legislative staffer will benefit the City of Farmington Hills.

Valerie Knol's bid for a Farmington Hills city council seat puts her in familiar territory.

Knol served on Farmington city council from 2003 to 2011. She cited increased work responsibilities and caring for her baby daughter when announcing her decision to step down after eight years.

Since then, Knol has put her Farmington home up for sale and moved to Farmington Hills, where she lives with her husband, political consultant Paul Welday, and daughter Natalie, who is 3.

Why she decided to run
"I believe I have the right experience to tackle the issues the city's facing right now ... I think my work in Lansing also gives me a different perspective. I have knowledge of legislation as it's coming down and how it affects the city."

Community connections
Farmington Players, American Association of University Women, Farmington Family YMCA, Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce

Employment
Knol works on the staff of Michigan House Speaker Pro Tem Rep. John Walsh (R-19th District).
