'I Really Love This City': Farmington's Mayor Says Farewell

Elected in 2005, Tom Buck presides over his final city council meeting Monday.

Serving on Farmington city council and as the city's mayor has been "a piece of the American dream" for Tom Buck.

After two terms, Buck decided not to run for re-election this year. In an emotional farewell delivered at the end of Monday night's city council meeting, Buck said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve.

"I really love this city," he said.

Inspired by his father, who served in the U.S. Air Force, and his mother, Buck said he also wanted "to show my kids and nieces and nephews that service is important, and anything is possible."

He talked about the community's character through tough financial times, as employees sacrificed salary and benefits, residents approved additional taxes and city departments cut expenses and shared services.

"There's more to do," he said. "Let's all keep it growing together."

City staff members and officials thanked Buck for his leadership. New council member Steve Schneemann said Buck's "positive attitude and vision were instrumental in carrying Farmington through a very difficult time ... You've been an inspiration to me."

"You've brought about with your leadership a great amount of integrity," council member JoAnne McShane said. "You went above and beyond the call of duty."

After the meeting ended, Buck's son Andrew presented his father with a "Best Mayor in the World" trophy. "I have always been inspired by his passion and commitment," he said.
