Lights Go Out in Farmington Hills Saturday for Earth Hour 2012

The city will turn off all non-essential lights for an hour and offer an Earth Hour event at the Nature Discovery Center.

The will participate in Earth Hour 2012 by turning off all non-essential indoor and outdoor lighting on City-owned property from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.

The city's Nature Discovery Center will also host a family event that evening, with a local astronomer and opportunities to learn about the cosmos. 

An international event sponsored by the World Wildlife Federation, Earth Hour is designed to express global solidarity in the commitment to controlling climate change. Earth Hour 2012 will take place at 8:30 p.m. local time in more than 80 countries.

In Farmington Hills, Robert Bosch LLC, one of the city’s largest employers, observes Earth Hour. For the fourth year, lights will be turned off for one hour at both its Farmington Hills and Plymouth locations, in addition to many of its other sites around the world, starting at 8:30 p.m. local time.

The Farmington Hills Special Services Division has planned a special “One Starry Night” event to recognize Earth Hour on Saturday, March 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the in . Families will have the opportunity to look at the stars through a telescope, learn about light pollution, and create a star wheel with local astronomer Steve Hasell.

Children must be at least 5 years old to participate. Cost is $5 per person or $15 per family of four. Registration is available online at https://recreg.fhgov.com or in person at the Costick Center, 28600 W. Eleven Mile Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
