Romney Country: Farmington, Farmington Hills Support Michigan Native

Voter turnout was light today in both cities, clerks report.

Farmington and Farmington Hills residents helped former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney to a Republican primary win in Michigan today. 

The Associated Press and NBC called the race for the Michigan native after 10 p.m. this evening. 

Turnout in Farmington precincts in today's presidential primary ranged from a little over 18 percent to 30 percent.

City Clerk Sue Halberstadt said there were no voting issues, and the turnout across the city was "relatively light". 

"There was nothing about today that was remarkable," she said.

All precincts voted solidly for Mitt Romney, with the vast majority of voters supporting Romney, Rick Santorum or Ron Paul. The largest number of Democratic ballots, 103, were cast in precinct 2; in the rest, Democrats cast fewer than 60 votes.

In Farmington Hills, city clerk Pam Smith reported an equally dull day at the polls, with an overall turnout of 21.15 percent, a bit less than the 2008 primary turnout of 29.75 percent. 

Farmington Hills also turned out solidly for Romney, with 53 percent to Santorum's 27.25 percent. Ron Paul picked up 9.34 percent of the Hills vote, and Newt Gingrich, 7.02 percent. None of the other candidates broke the 20-vote barrier, with the exception of Jon Huntsman, with 26 votes. More than 200 voters were uncommitted.

Democrats cast a total of 2,465 votes in Farmington Hills, with 90 percent of them choosing incumbent President Barack Obama. The balance of voters were uncommitted. The largest turnout for Democrats happened in precinct 4, with 183 voters; most precincts had fewer than 100 of those ballots cast.
