Farmington and Farmington Hills residents are invited to share their thoughts about the community's cable franchise at three hearings this month.

The franchise agreement between Bright House Networks and the cities of Farmington, Farmington Hills and Novi is administered by SWOCC (Southwestern Oakland Cable Commission) and expires in December of 2015. As part of the franchise process, residents can weigh in on future cable-related needs and the performance of Bright House since the beginning of the agreement in 2000.

Residents may participate in one or more of these meetings:

Written comments may be sent by Dec. 16 to SWOCC Studios, 33900 W. Nine Mile Rd., Farmington, MI 48336 or eangott@fhgov.com.

Comments are not being requested on cable rates or cable channels, which the cities do not control, or lack of cable competition.

Good, because their internet speeds are not competitive with Comcast or UVerse, they have slower speeds or more money. Comcast base plan is 50Mbs at least now. Thiers I am not sure. But before Uverse recent increase, 12 Mbs was $43 without contract and for $50 you can get 10Mbs with BH. You need 12 Mbs for one HD stream which I need for Amazon Prime.

I think WOW should be allowed in.

Just wondering: Why are comments about cable competition (or lack of) not being taken?

If we can't discuss rates or competition, that doesn't really leave much to say. So what do they plan on discussing?
Eric Vogel December 06, 2013 at 08:37 AM
Here is the discussion we need to have. There are two providers here. TWC / BrightHouse ATT Uverse Lets do what other cities are doing to bring in copetition Get WOW Cable in here. It will be hard because at least Comcast gives the city a extra cut to keep out competition. So lets tell them to allow WOW in! BH will have to bring in better service (Internet speed) with better prices.

I'm in a weird little pocket of Farmington Hills where U-Verse television is not available. So it's either Bright House or one of the satellite dish services with DSL for internet.

I agree that the fundamental discussion that needs to occur is allowing competition. The whole cable monopoly scheme that developed in the '80s and '90s has run its course: the companies long ago recouped their initial expenditures for infrastructure and should be required to share the lines much like the phone company was forced to do. Until that happens, there's not much to talk about.

Actually I LOVE Brighthouse. (no I do NOT work there). Did you know they WILL work with you to help you reduce your fee? Stop complaining and communicate, you might get answers that way

I LOVE Brighthouse also. And NO I don't work there either. But they are there when you need them They actually answer the phone and are there to help you at any time. I have them on my speed-dial for when needed and they even help me over the phone. You are lucky to even get thru to a real person with AT&T. I love Brighthouse and I am sticking with them. And yes they will work with you on fees etc.

I am not saying you have to switch. If you want to stick with BH or ATT, please feel free to do so. The more competition the better. Maybe BH's Internet plans will be more usable than they are now, maybe they will add a few more channels or decide not to raise rates for a few years. Plus if you call to bargen, they will probably work with you more. So I suggest we let them know to let WOW or Comcast in, it will be better for the community.
