The Week Ahead: Classic Cars and Music Under the Stars

Rhythmz in Riley Park returns this week, bringing music to downtown Farmington on Friday nights.

The summer outdoor music season starts this week in downtown Farmington, with the return of Rhythmz in Riley Park.

This annual free concert series draws hundreds of people to the on Friday nights, and as always, this year's line-up has something for everyone. Some acts will return from last year, like The Paisley Fogg, which opens the series on June 6 at 7 p.m. So grab your lawn chair, bring a picnic dinner and let this group take you back to the 1960s.

But that's the end of the week. Here's what else is happening:

  • Farmington city council meets Monday night, 7 p.m., at city hall. Residents will have the chance to weigh in on the 2011-2012 city budget and millage rates during a public hearing, which is also up for approval later in the meeting. The agenda also includes approval of the , , Brownfield Redevelopment and Joint Authority budgets; changes to water, sewer and garbage/recycling collection rates; and amendments to ordinances related to the zoning board of appeals membership, off-street parking, business licenses and massage facilities. Most importantly, there's always time for public comment.
  • If you're more into classic cars than council, should be back Monday night if the weather stays clear. Car owners start gathering at Village Commons parking lot on Grand River, west of Power Road, around 5 p.m. Nearby always offers menu specials to make the evening complete. Admission is free.
  • Is your child going to try out for Farmington Schools sports teams? Student athletes in grades 7-12 (2011-12)  can get their required at on Tuesday from 5 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Cost is $15, cash only.
  • Bring your walking shoes and camera to Wednesday at 6 p.m., for a walking photography course. Photographer Jacob Nothstine will share tips and secrets to improve your nature photography. You must register; cost is $10 residents; $15 non-residents. Call 248-473-1800 to register.
  • It's time for another Porch Party at the in Farmington – and this one offers ice cream. Head over to the historic Mansion at 7 p.m. on Thursday to spend time on the porch or the lawn. There will be board games and lawn games available. Admission is $5, cash only; .
