The Week Ahead: Council, School Board, Nature Center Open House

Farmington Hills city officials and the Farmington school board meet early this week.

Recognitions abound at local government meetings this week, from volunteer appreciation at Monday's Farmington Hills City Council meeting to PTA Reflections contest winners at Tuesday's Farmington school board meeting.

Here's a look at the rest of their agendas, as well as other notable events this week:

  • Farmington Hills city officials will talk about and reviewing the city manager's performance at a 6 p.m. study session Monday. At 6:30 p.m., community volunteers will be honored at a reception. The council's regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. with an agenda that includes formal recognition of volunteers and the George Romney Volunteer of the Year; a public hearing on a proposed self-storage unit project at 29199 Orchard Lake Rd.; extension of a contract to build 1,100 feet of sidewalk on Halsted Road between Industrial Park Drive and Grand River; and adoption of sewer and water rates.   • The Farmington Board of Education will once again hold its Tuesday meeting at North Farmington High School's Hunt Auditorium, this time to accommodate all the winners of the PTA Reflections creative competition. The board has a full agenda, including the potential sale of Eagle Elementary on 14 Mile Road to the Islamic Center of Franklin. For a preview of this meeting, read Carol Lundberg's story.
  • Are you an adult who loves the Harry Potter series? The is looking for volunteers to serve as discussion leaders for a series of Tuesday night book discussions. You must go through training, which is offered at 7 p.m. Tuesday. For more information or to register for the training, follow the "Buy Tickets" link in our event listing.
  • Wednesday is Military Appreciation Day at the and of the Farmington Community Library. Fines will be waived for military personnel and their families who show military IDs. Everyone is invited to drop off items for care packages that will be sent to our troops overseas through the end of the month. The day's activities will include crafts and letter-writing stations for children. A patriotic sing-along starts at 7 p.m. at the Farmington branch.
  • On Thursday, teachers and education professionals are invited to take a look at everything the in has to offer. You'll have the opportunity to sample programs that are especially geared toward students. An RSVP is required; call 248-477-1135 or send an email to asimons@fhgov.com.
