Alameda 'Cutie' in the Running for $150K Scholarship

Kelsey Anne Kathan, who attends school in Farmington Hills, wants to be a veterinarian.

An student is among 18 children competing nationally for a $150,000 scholarship offered by Cuties California Mandarins. 

Kelsey Anne Kathan, 5, of Livonia has already won a weekly prize for a video submitted by her parents, Jill and Gary Kathan, entitled, “Our Silly, Little Future Vet.” Now, the family – including grandparents Charles and Patricia Mozdzen of Dearborn Heights – is pushing to get out the vote in the final hours of the contest, which ends April 27 at 11:59 p.m.

"Kelsey’s goal is to become a veterinarian and help all animals, especially kitties," Jill Kathan said.

She said the scholarship, which is tax-free, will be placed in a trust fund for the winner and can be used towards college, books, and boarding.

"You can only vote once, but you can vote from Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus," Kathan added. As of Wednesday night, Kelsey had more than 1,100 votes. 

In addition to the scholarship, the winner receives a $5,000 DonorsChoose.org card. This money can be donated to a local school district or teacher who has a project posted on the DonorsChoose.org site.
