Battle of the Middles Raises Record Amount for Farmington Goodfellows

The seventh annual event pulled in more than $4,800 to help families in need.

Organizers say this year's Battle of the Middles basketball game raised a record amount of money for the Farmington Area Goodfellows and Neighborhood House.

Marc Szalka, an 8th grade math teacher at , told supporters in an email today that the annual event, held Dec. 16, raised $4,856.10.

"I am completely speechless," Szalka wrote. "This is by far the best we have ever collected from the Battle. All the credit goes to you, our students, and our community for coming together & being so generous this year!"

Szalka created the event, which pits teachers from Dunckel and against teachers from and on the basketball court. This year, the North team – Dunckel and Warner – came out on top, 51-45.

Ticket and concession stand proceeds, plus donations of nonperishable food items and new toys, went to the Goodfellows, an organization that works to ensure no child or senior goes without a Christmas, and Neighborhood House, which helps local residents in need all year.

The Battle of the Middles has raised a total of $20,555 over the past seven years, Szalka wrote.
