Car Buffs Step Up to Help Steppingstone

Supporters hope the lure of sleek cars will induce the public to step out on behalf of a renowned Farmington Hills school.

Backers of Steppingstone School and cars buffs from the Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan are joining forces for the 3rd Annual Benefit Car Show at the school on Saturday, Sept. 22.

Proceeds from the event will fund Student Financial Aid Awards at the school, known for its programs serving gifted children. Last year, Steppingstone moved into its current building, a former car dealership at 30250 Grand River.

“We are hoping to have 75 vehicles on display this year,” said S. Toshi Adair, a staunch supporter of Steppingstone and a classic car owner. Adair, who is refurbishing his 1993 Mustang LX SSP, said makes other than Mustang will be shown as well.

Car owners will have the chance to win a variety of trophies, while showcasing their rides. “Cleanliness (of the vehicle) is the top criteria to win the Best in Show Trophy,” said Adair. An ill-placed handprint or dust particle can make the difference in which car takes the coveted top prize, he added.

While the cars serve as the eye candy, Adair said, there’s a bigger picture benefit to staging the show.

“The $10 registration fee for each vehicle to be judged goes to the school," Adair said. “We also hope through media coverage and public curiosity, Steppingstone will continue to be recognized."

The festivities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in the school's parking lot. Car judging runs from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
