Contest Win Gives Steppingstone Funds to Finish Lube Shop Classroom Conversion

The school receives $2,000 at a Thursday presentation.

By June, a cavernous former lube shop at Steppingstone School will have the floor and insulation it needs to officially become an art and science classroom.

An entry written by parent Alison Kenyon and submitted by teacher Mary Gage to the Great American Classroom Makeover national contest, sponsored by Great American Financial Resources, led to the school winning $2,000 to finish the project. In 2010, Steppingstone moved into the former Holiday Chevrolet dealership on Grand River in Farmington Hills, converting offices and shop space to learning spaces for gifted children.

"This check will let us finish up the job," head of school Kiyo Morse said after a Thursday presentation held during the school's Science Fair.
