Professor Discusses Children's Book Illustrator's Works

Wayne State University Professor Stanley Rosenthal will discuss the award-winning illustrations of his former student, David Small.

Small earned the 2001 Caldecott Medal for his clever presidential caricatures in Judith St. George’s book, So You Want to be President. Small earned the 1998 Caldecott Honor for his illustrations in The Gardener, written by Sarah Stewart. The book is about hope during the darkest days of the Great Depression, and Professor Rosenthal was surprised to see his own image as Uncle Jim, one of the most sullen characters in a children’s picture book.
