Each year in September, about one-third of the 50,000 National Merit high scorers are notified that they have qualified as semifinalists. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state.

In February, about 15,000 Finalists will be announced. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test.

The 2012 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April.
