Farmington/Farmington Hills Optimists Announce Speech Contest Winners

Winners Lynn Lerner and Landon Tucker move on to regional competition April 21.

The Farmington/Farmington Hills Breakfast Optimist Club honored six speakers in the Boys' and Girls' Oratorical Contest, held last month at the Jon Grant Community Center in Farmington Hills.

6th grader Lynn Lerner and  8th grader Landon Tucker received top honors and will move on to regional competition in Waterford on April 21. 

Students recited speeches that were four to five minutes in length on the topic: "How my Optimism Helps Me Overcome Obstacles." The contest provides young people with the opportunity to compete for a college scholarship and express their views on a pre-assigned topic.

Other honorees include: 

GIRLS

  • 2nd place - Kayla Lemarbe, 10th grade,
  • 3rd place - Elizabeth Ho, 8th grade, Dunckel Middle School

BOYS

  • 2nd place - Jagjeet Wani, 6th grade, Warner Upper Elementary School
  • 3rd place - Thomas Lichtenberg, 5th grade,

All winners received a medallion; monetary awards from the Optimist Club were $100 for 1st place, $75 for 2nd place and $50 for 3rd place.

Correction: Due to incorrect information provided, the grade level of 1st place winner Landon Tucker was incorrectly reported in the original version of this post. He is an 8th grader.
