Farmington High Grad Wins Megan & Michael McKennett Scholarship

Jamie Kiefer plans to enroll this fall at Oakland Community College.

The Gill PTA has awarded the Megan & Michael McKennett Scholarship to Farmington High School senior Jamie Kiefer.

The scholarship is presented each year in memory of Megan and Michael McKennett, students at Power Middle School and Farmington High School, who died in a car crash.

Kiefer was selected because of her involvement with marching band, volunteer work at St. Kenneth Catholic Church, and her passion for animals and the environment. In her application essay, she talked about her 4th grade Gill Elementary School teacher Maria Blanco "accidentally" buying a guinea pig, which became a class pet. Keifer wrote that she realized her love for animals as she helped take care of the pet, named S'mores.

In a recommendation letter, Power teacher Colleen Stamm wrote, "Jamie will continue to do great things with her life and will become a leader within any community she chooses to be a part of in her future."

Stamm and Blanco surprised Kiefer by showing up for the presentation of her award by Scholarship Chair Lynn Halton. Kiefer was presented with a certificate, a plant, and a $500 check will be sent directly to her chosen college, Oakland Community College. She plans to take courses there and then transfer to Michigan State University, where she plans to major in an environmental program.

The McKennett memorial scholarship recognizes one student each year who shares interests held dear by the McKennett family and puts their ideas into action through volunteer work.
