Farmington Kids – and Officials – Head Back to School

Students at a Farmington bus stop got to meet their school district's leader this morning.

Supt. Sue Zurvalec rode the bus with students headed to , after chatting with parents at a bus stop on Loomis St. Valinda Elder took a photo of her son, Cecil (C.J.), 8, with Zurvalec. C.J. is going into 3rd grade this year, carrying a backpack fully loaded with a binder, sanitizing wipes, tissues, crayons, pencils and other supplies, he said.

Jenna Latimer's 5-year-old daughter, Emma, was headed to her first day of kindergarten.

"It was good," Latimer said after the bus left. "She was excited about it ... I think having friends helped, and having Mrs. Zurvalec here helped, too. (Emma) just lit up."

Once at the school, students were directed to the appropriate entrance for their classrooms.

While some rode the bus, the Chene family walked to the building. Parents Stephen and Tracie walked hand-in-hand with 8-year-old Jolie, who is starting 3rd grade.

"We walk rain or shine," Stephen Chene said. "We have ever since kindergarten." The Chenes have an older daughter, Haley, who is now at , but was also part of the family's walking tradition.

After a summer of swimming with a team at Beechview Swim Club and a special trip to Colorado, Jolie said she's looking forward to school, and especially studying science, her favorite subject.
