Farmington, North Among Newsweek/Daily Beast Top 1,000 U.S. Schools

The publications rank high schools based on six indicators, including graduation rates and average standardized test scores.

and high schools have reason for a bit of extra pride this week – both are on a list of the top 1,000 U.S. schools.

North Farmington ranked 746th, and Farmington ranked 781st. Other area schools making the list included the International Academy in Bloomfield Hills (49th), Troy High School (175th), Bloomfield Hills Andover (218th), Ernest W. Seaholm in Birmingham (347th), Troy Athens (422nd), Novi, (472nd), Lahser in Bloomfield Hills (563rd), West Bloomfield (640th), Walled Lake Central (702nd), Walled Lake Northern (776th) and Canton (932nd). 

Compiled by Newsweek magazine and The Daily Beast website, the "America's Best High Schools" list ranks schools on six, weighted criteria:

  • Four-year, on-time graduation rate (25%)
  • Percent of 2011 graduates accepted to college (25%)
  • Number of college-level tests per student (25%)
  • Average SAT and/or ACT score (10%)
  • Average AP/IB/AICE exam score (10%)
  • AP/IB/AICE courses offered per student (5%)

Adanvaced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) test standards were considered to measure the "degree to which each school is challenging its students with college-level examinations" and the "depth of college-level curricula offered," according to the report's "How We Compiled the List" web page.
