Farmington PTA Founders Dinner Honors Contributions

The annual event celebrates the accomplishments of Farmington schools' Parent Teacher Association.

On Monday, teachers, parents, administrators and community members met at in Farmington Hills to mark the many achievements of the Farmington Public Schools Parent Teacher Association (PTA).  

Chris Greig, President of the PTA council for and mother of two Farmington students, said “the PTA is vital to the community, reaching beyond school walls.” She cited the PTA’s work with groups such as the and the .

Attendees included U.S. Congressman Gary Peters (D), State Rep. Vicki Barnett (D-Farmington Hills), State Sen. Vincent Gregory (D-Southfield) and Farmington Schools Superintendent Sue Zurvalec, as well as members of the school board.

Michigan PTA president-elect Shaton Berry addressed the crowd, speaking to the importance of PTA activities and their goal of “making every child’s potential a reality.” 

FPS Superintendent Sue Zurvalec praised the PTA, saying “it takes a whole community to raise our children and Chris Greig, the PTA and the PTSA do this every day.”

Zurvalec, Berry and Barnett encouraged attendees to get involved in contacting the state to express concern for potential cuts to education in Gov. Rick Snyder’s new budget.  

Monday’s event honored parent volunteers from 14 Farmington schools including PTA council member of the year, Beate Turner from .  

The PTA Founders Day celebration is an annual event locally and nationwide.  The Farmington Public Schools event has nearly doubled in the last four years, from about 70 people at the first gathering, to an estimated 140 guests this year.
