Farmington School Board Honors Outstanding High School Student Scholars

"The level of academic achievement and the great aspirations these students have is truly, truly what makes this community so strong," said Catherine Cost, assistant superintendent of instructional services. 

Honorees included three students, one from each high school, who scored a perfect 36 composite score on the ACT (American College Testing) standardized test, which measures a student's readiness for college. Rashmika Goswami, Harrison High, Jane Xiao, Farmington High, and Mrigank Gupta, North Farmington High, earned the highest possible score on each of four tests in English, math, reading and science. 

Peter Romero, North Farmington High, is among 5,000 Hispanic/Latino high school students honored through the National Hispanic Recognition Program. Students from the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Mariana Islands and Marshall Islands are selected based on their PSAT/NMSQT college entrance exam scores. 

These students were honored through the National Merit Scholarship and National Achievement Scholarship programs, academic competitions that recognize and provide scholarships for high school students:

Participants in the Boys and Girls State programs attend between their junior and senior years. Students are divided into "cities" and hold elect mock municipal officials and representatives to a mock state legislature. They also elect counterparts to the state's governor, lieutenant governor and other officials. Mock trials are held, with students volunteering to play the parts of lawyers, defendants, jury members and media. 

The largest group of recognized students were named AP Scholars by the College Board for exceptional achievement on college-level advanced placement exams. AP Scholars are students who complete three or more exams with grades of 3 or higher; AP Scholar with Honor honorees achieve a grade of 3.25 or higher on all exams and 3 or higher on four or more exams; and AP Scholar with Distinction honorees have earned an average grade of at least 3.5 on all exams and 3 or higher on five or more exams.
