Most Farmington ACT/MME Results Show Long-Term Improvement

The Michigan Department of Education releases state-wide standardized test results Monday.

While the percentage of Farmington Public Schools high school students who meet state benchmarks shows gains and losses year over year, long-term numbers show improvement in most subject areas.

State-wide results for the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) and ACT college entrance exam released Monday by the Michigan Department of Education show a four-year upward trend in both assessments. However, MME student proficiency scores declined slightly from last year to this year. High school juniors take the tests in the spring.

Student performance falls into one of four categories: advanced, proficient, partially proficient and not proficient. Students must score either "proficient" or "advanced" to be considered proficient in that subject. The percentage of Farmington students meeting ACT benchmarks in English improved by nearly six points, but dropped in math by more than three points.

Farmington's MME results show a drop of more than three points in the percentage of students judged proficient in math, with a slight improvement in writing and fairly steady year-over-year performance in science, reading and social studies.

All MME subject areas, except reading, show improvement over 2010 proficiency. The district posted a 3-point improvement in ACT English, and a slight increase in the percentage of students meeting benchmarks in all subject areas. Math, science and reading results each dropped by less than two points.

The state is in its second year of more rigorous standards, with scores of around 65 percent required to meet proficiency, up from 39 percent.
