Farmington Schools Honors Seniors at Breakfast

(FPS) celebrated contributions made by senior citizens Wednesday during the 16th Annual Senior Adult Forum Breakfast, held at the in Farmington Hills.

Officials also announced Michael Liebowitz as the Senior Extraordinaire Award Winner for 2011. The award honors a senior who is involved in FPS educational activities and who volunteers time and talents with students.

Nominated by former principal Rick Jones, Liebowitz is a media center volunteer at North and has devoted hundreds of hours of volunteer service to the school’s band program.

Along with his gift of time, he has also donated thousands of dollars, toward scholarships for band camp, a new scanner for the library and the with the World Trade Center sculpture.

“This remarkable man, so quiet and humble, will really hate this attention today, but you need to know that he is also brilliant, having been an aerospace engineer," Jones wrote in his nomination. "And, although volunteering in the media center is far from the thrill of launching a Saturn rocket, it is just as important in that it allows us to take off every day, with the confidence that our students are well served.”

Liebowitz joins Demetra and Toula Mehas and the late Tina Mehas (2005), the late Leona Geotzke (2006), Lincoln Avery (2007), Virginia Starr (2008), Allan Whittemore (2009) and Diane DeSousa (2010).

The orchestra and concert choir performed during the event, and seniors had time to browse exhibits from FPS schools and programs.
