Farmington Schools Principal Reads His Heart Out

James Anderson reads from inside a showcase at Power Upper Elementary School.

Power Upper Elementary principal James Anderson read his heart out Nov. 18 to help celebrate National Young Readers Week.

Beginning from the first bell until the last bell, Anderson read from inside the showcase in the front of the school, as part of the Principal Challenge for Pizza Hut's BOOK IT! Program. The event was co-founded by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

One elementary school principal will win 101 copies of the eighth book of the Wimpy Kid series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, which was released Nov. 5.

Anderson was asked to “volunteer” by sixth grade English Language Arts teacher, Christine Wilson. While he had previous commitments and was unable to compete for the prize during the week of Nov. 11-15, Anderson will record the event with BOOK IT!

BOOK IT! reaches more than 680,000 classrooms and 14 million children annually. Teachers and librarians set monthly reading goals and present students with a reading award certificate when goals are met. Students take the certificates to a Pizza Hut restaurant, where they are congratulated by a team member and given a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza.
