Farmington Youth Assistance Celebrates Young Volunteers

A Thursday breakfast honors 24 students from Farmington and Farmington Hills who have contributed hundreds of hours to schools, churches and charities.

Some helped out at school, others traveled outside the U.S., but all 24 Farmington area students honored during a Thursday morning breakfast at Glen Oaks Country Club in Farmington Hills have given of their time and talents to others.

Farmington Youth Assistance (FYA) hosted the annual celebration to recognize students for performing at least 100 hours of volunteer work not applied toward high school credit. Each was nominated by an adult, who was also invited to attend the event along with elected officials, city and school district leaders.

Guest speaker Kurt David, television host and author of From Glory Days: Successful Transitions of Professional Detroit Athletes, talked about the injury that ended his basketball career and started him down the road to a new career as a counselor. A lack of passion and purpose, he said, can be more dangerous than a lack of financial success.
