Gill Elementary Students Raise Funds to Help Endangered Animals

For 25 cents, students were allowed to bring their favorite stuffed animals to school.

students raised $137.75 Wednesday to help endangered animal species around the world.  

For a 25-cent donation to the animal of their choice, students were able to bring a stuffed animal to school. The school's Green Team members researched and hosted the fundraiser, selecting polar bears, lions and tigers as the animals that would benefit.  

The polar bear seemed to be the favorite, garnering $55 in donations. All proceeds will be donated to the Detroit Zoo.

The activity was also educational, as media specialist Cynthia Zervos included an educational component during media time to help students understand why animals are becoming extinct. 

Last year, students raised over $150 and adopted a polar bear, snow leopard and tiger through the World Wild Life Fund.

Parent volunteer Gina Adams-Levy said there was high participation in the event, and "we are very proud of our students and their enthusiasm to protect endangered animals."
