Highmeadow Raises $400 to Help Families Through Heifer International

Students snuggle in to purchase animals for needy families in other countries.

With sleeping bags, pillows and stuffed animals in hand, the students and teachers at in Farmington Hills snuggled in for a morning of reading. The school took advantage of the April 20 half-day to enjoy reading, but also make a difference.

If they wanted to wear their pajamas to school, students were asked to bring a donation for Heifer International.

"We are learning to be global citizens," said second grade teacher Lorena Burke, who helped organize the day. "As such, we are caring for other people and the earth. Our read-a-thon raised money for Heifer International to encourage sustainability in agriculture for people around the world."

The school raised over $400. Students read in their classrooms or with their “buddies.” Everyone enjoyed the event and participated in some way.

“Our students are excited to be part of helping people all over the world have better lives,” said Burke. “We will be choosing a variety of animals to purchase and meet the needs of families as far away as Asia and South America.”
