OCC Womencenter Art Show Opens Sept. 15 in Farmington Hills

Among the artists featured is Farmington resident Valerie McNeece.

The Womencenter at in Farmington Hills announces its 21st annual national women’s art exhibition.

The juried exhibition, “From Our Perspectives,” runs Thursday, Sept. 15 through Friday, Oct. 14 at the Orchard Ridge Campus’ Smith Theatre Gallery. Viewing hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.

This year’s juror, Shiva Ahmadi, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Azad University in Tehran, Iran, in 1998.  Soon after moving to the United States, she earned her Master of Fine Arts degrees from Wayne State University, and from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills. Since then, she has participated in solo and group shows in the United States and throughout the world, including London, Abu Dhabi, Turkey, and Dubai.

Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Art in America, Art News, Canvas Magazine, The Boston Globe, and Contemporary 21.  Ahmadi’s work is included in the collection of The Detroit Institute of Arts as well as in numerous private collections. She was a recipient of a 2009 Kresge Artist Fellowship, and is represented by the Leila Heller Gallery of New York.

Over 300 works of art were entered this year by women artists nationwide. The juried exhibition will host 30 artists with 34 pieces in a variety of media including acrylic, oil, textile, clay, photography, ink, pencil, metal, watercolor, and various mixed media and found objects. Artists in the show are from Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Ohio.
