Rainbow Awards Breakfast Takes a Hiatus

After 15 years, this annual Multicultural Multiracial Community Council event is taking time off.

The Multicultural Multiracial Community Council of Farmington/Farmington Hills (MCMR) has announced the annual Rainbow Recognition Awards Breakfast will not be held this year.

For the past 15 years, the Rainbow Recognition Awards Breakfast has  honored members of the community who exemplified and carried out the mission of the organization, “to recognize that all people are integral to the community’s health, harmony, and successful future. We explore and celebrate our differences and embrace our commonalities.”

Past winners have included people of all ages, from students to seniors. The breakfast was also a time for MCMR to report on its annual progress toward goals set by the group's steering committee. Among this year's accomplishments:

  • passage of a resolution by both Farmington and Farmington Hills City Councils and the Farmington Public Schools Board of Education to request that the State legislature modify hate crime laws to include categories for disabilities and sexual orientation;
  • celebrating the 15th Annual Rainbow Recognitions Awards Breakfast program with a focus on women’s issues;
  • holding the Eighth Annual workshop honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and other civil rights leaders;
  • offering two separate three-week sessions of “Chatter that Matters” community dialogues;
  • presenting a coffeehouse and religious institution tour during the Twelfth Annual celebration of Heritage Week.

The MCMR Steering Committee plans to resume the Rainbow Recognition Awards Breakfast program next year and welcomes community participation. For information, call Executive Director Karen Bolsen at 248-871-2512.
