Retired Farmington Schools Principal Returns to Fill Vacancy

Margaret McKinley will fill in until a permanent replacement is found for Kathy Smith, who is moving to a central office post.

Retired Farmington Public Schools principal Margaret McKinley has been chosen to serve as Wood Creek Elementary School principal through the end of the school year.

McKinley replaces current principal Kathy Smith, who is moving to a central office administrative position.

According to a district press release, McKinley's first day will be Jan. 27. Wood Creek teacher Melissa McDermid-Wiercinski will assume the role of administrative intern on that day as well.

Smith worked with McKinley as a colleague for more than 10 years. “Margaret is an absolutely phenomenal person and principal. Her leadership philosophy and style will be a wonderful match for Wood Creek," she said.

McDermid-Wiercinski moves from a 2nd grade classroom, where she co-taught with Katelyn Riley. Riley will take over full-time teaching of the classroom.

The permanent selection and placement of a new principal will be finalized by August, 2014. Smith will work with McKinley and McDermid-Wiercinski before Jan. 27, when she assumes her duties as executive director of human resources.
