Scholarships Available to Farmington Students

Local and national dollars are available to help 2012 graduates.

Local students looking for dollars to help them pay for post-secondary education have some opportunities with local connections. Here are several we've found:

1. C. Robert Maxfield PTA Council Scholarship

Up to three $500 scholarships will be awarded to students who are active members of their school's PTSA. Applications must include a letter of recommendation and an essay describing how the student benefited from involvement in PTSA or another community-based service project. The application is posted with this article or available on the school district's website.

2. Kohl's Cares Scholarship program

Kohl’s Department Stores will be accepting nominations for outstanding young volunteers, ages 6 to 18, from Feb. 1 to March 15 at kohlskids.com. Nominators must be 21 years or older.

Through the program, Kohl’s will award more than $440,000 in scholarships and prizes to more than 2,200 young volunteers. Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card. More than 200 of the store winners will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.

3.

Students in grades 7-12 may enter this contest, and winners in the grade 9-12 category will be sent on to district competition, where they'll be eligible to win scholarships. All entries must be received by Friday, Feb. 3. 4.

Students in Farmington Public Schools should stop by their counseling office to obtain an application for this scholarship. Awards are not necessarily based on academics; students are also judged on an essay about their life's goals and what they are doing to reach them. Applications are due by Feb. 29.
