Time to Get Your Little Ones Ready For School

Kindergarten registration opens, and Farmington Schools hosts a pre-school open house.

It may seem early to start thinking about the start of school this fall. But kindergarten registration begins this week, and Farmington Public Schools is hosting a pre-school open house March 5.

Registration for kindergarten begins today, and while you can register your child at any time, school officials urge parents to sign up early.

Registration is completed at the family's home school. (To find your home school, check the interactive map on the District's Web site.) To register, parents should bring a driver's license and proof of residency, such as proof of ownership (deed) or closing documents if the home was recently purchased, current property tax statement, or lease/rental agreement with occupancy date including a list of all occupants.

Also needed are any two of the following items: current gas, electric, telephone or cable bill. Water bills are not accepted.

Half-day kindergarten option

Farmington Schools offers full-day kindergarten; a half-day program will be offered if 25 or more students register by Friday, April 1, 2011. The half-day program would be located at in Farmington Hills. The morning session would be from 8:23-11:23 a.m. and, if needed, the afternoon session would be from 12:23-3:28 p.m. No transportation is provided for the half-day program as it is a school of choice option. At the end of a student’s half-day kindergarten year, the student would return to their home school.

Pre-School open house

Registration for returning students is on-going from Feb. 28-March 4; general registration is open from March 7-11. A free grant program for tuition-based programs is avaialble to those who meet eligibility requirements, and there are no residency requirements for tuition-based programs.

The district offers a state-aligned curriculum for 2-year-olds through 4-year-olds, with before and after care available for most classes.
