Turf's in High Demand at Newly Opened Total Sports Complex

The facility on Farmington Road opened Monday, in time for the indoor soccer season.

The new Total Sports Complex in Farmington opened Monday, and already, prime time field space is tough to come by.

The challenge, owner Tony Moscone said, will be filling the times after 8 p.m. on weekends and 9 p.m. on weekdays, with teams playing softball, baseball, flag football and, of course, soccer.

The company took over the Farmington Tennis Club in September; the goal was to be open by the first week in November, for the start of the indoor soccer season.

"We had the help of the City of Farmington to get open on time," Moscone said. "This project went really well."

The turf on two, 120-foot by 265-foot fields is made partly with ground up tires, like the turf at Ford Field in Detroit, Moscone said. In addition, the facility houses a small fitness center and plenty of tables and chairs for parents to use while waiting for their children.

Good news: There's free wi-fi.

Farmington manager Erich Shrewsbury said his goal is "having a lot of people enjoying themselves in this facility." Having grown up just a mile down the road, at Seven Mile and Farmington in Livonia, he is familiar with the area and said he spent a lot of time on Farmington's Shiawassee sledding hill as a child.
