Farmington Area Kids Invited to Help Build New Wrestling Club

Coach Todd Hoffmeyer says the club is open to boys and girls who are interested in learning more about the sport.

On a blustery Thursday night, the turnout for a Farmington Wrestling Club practice at Farmington High School was a little light.

Boys worked together in small groups, practicing basic techniques taught by coach Todd Hoffmeyer of Farmington. Hoffmeyer said illness kept a number of kids at home, but he would still like to see many more involved in the fledgling club, which is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 14.

"It's for kids that want to be introduced to the sport of wrestling in Farmington and Farmington Hills," said Hoffmeyer, a high school and college wrestler who lives in Farmington and has three children. He said he started the club because there wasn't one available in the community.

"My youngest is a boy, and I didn't want to have to take him all over the place," Hoffmeyer said.

He's also a firm believer in the benefits wrestling offers; Hoffmeyer describes it as "a fun sport that teaches them a lot". Hoffmeyer said he's working alone right now, but has other wrestlers waiting in the wings to help coach as the club grows. He'd like to see the club become a "feeder" for the Farmington, Harrison and North Farmington wrestling teams, sending them "kids with superior championship talent".

The program will be active all year around, and club members have already begun participating in competitions. Hoffmeyer would also love to hold a wrestling camp to give wrestlers an intensive training experience.

"In order to do that," he said, "we'll need some help."
