Farmington Family YMCA Swim Team Finishes 2nd in Zone Meet

Eleven members of the team will travel this month to the 2013 YMCA Short Course Nationals meet.

Farmington Family Stingray swimmers took second place in the 2013 Great Lakes Zone YMCA Swimming Championships, held March 15-17 at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

The 24 Stingrays were among 1,600 top YMCA swimmers from 100 teams represented the states of Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. Though small in numbers, the team was large in talent and heart, and proud to place just behind the Flint Falcons.

The 15-and-over boys took home the high point award in their age group, and the 15-and-over girls placed second in their age group. The Stingrays were led by coaches Rich Bennetts and Robert Luke. 

Nick Leshok and Mallory Buha led the team with individual first place finishes. Leshok (16) placed 1st in the 50 free, 21.65, the 100 free, 47.87 and the 200 free, 1:43.84. He placed 2nd in the 200 Breast, 2:10.07, 3rd in the 100 breast, 59.59 and the 200 IM, 1:57.19, and 4th in the 100 Fly, 53.47.

Mallory Buha (15) set a meet record and placed 1st in the 200 Back, 2:02.91 and also took 1st in the 100 Back, 57.75. She placed 7th in the 500 Free, 5:20.39, 8th in the 200 IM, 2:13.84, 12th in the 200 Fly, 2:14.34 and 16th in the 200 Free, 2:00.17 and the 100 Fly, 1:00.76.

The 15-and-over boys won all of their relays throughout the meet. The relay team of Jack Kennedy, Jake Wasko, Christopher Szymchak and Leshok won the 200 Freestyle relay, 1:27.89, the 400 Freestyle relay, 3:15.36, and the 800 Freestyle Relay, 7:08.07. The relay team of Szymchak, Leshok, Danny McNeece and Wasko won the 200 Medley relay, 1:36.94 and the 400 Medley relay, 3:33.33.

The 15-and-over girls relay team of Lauren Folkert, Mallory and Maranda Buha and Emily Brunett won the 800 Free relay with the time of 7:51.06. The relay team of the Buhas, Brunett and Mikayla Doepker won the 400 Medley relay, with the time of 4:00.83.

10-and-Under Girls

Greta Gidley (9) placed 13th in the 100 IM with the time of 1:14.61.

10-and-Under Boys

Isaiah Erb (10) placed 8th in the 50 Breast with the time of 40.03. The relay team of Daniel Xu, Conor East, Andrew Pan and Erb placed 11th in the 200 Free relay, 2:08.36 and 12th in the 200 Medley relay, 2:26.47.

11 and 12 Girls

Aubrey East (12) placed 16th in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:16.96.

13 and 14 Girls

Julia Borri (14) placed 13th in the 200 IM. Emma Bradley (14) placed 13th in the 100 Fly. Christiana Buterakos (14) placed 14th in the 500 Free, 5:32.20 and 15th in the 100 Fly, 1:04.08. The relay team of Hannah Chao, Borri, Buterakos and Bradley placed 6th in the 200 Medley relay and 9th in the 200 Free relay.

15-and-Over Girls

Emily Brunett (15) had seven top sixteen finishes. She placed 3rd in the 500 Free, 5:14.17, 7th in the 200 Fly, 2:12.67 and the 50 Free, 25.03, 9th in the 400 IM, 4:45.30, 10th in the 200 Free, 1:58.38 and 13th in the 100 Free, 54.94 and the 100 Fly, 1:00.71. Maranda Buha (17) placed 3rd in the 50 Free, 24.36, 4th in the 50 Fly, 26.35 and the 100 Free, 53.41, 5th in the 50 Back, 28.39 and the 200 Free, 1:57.11 and 6th in the 100 Fly, 58.71. Mikayla Doepker (16) placed 11th in the 100 Breast, 1:09.97 and 12th in the 50 Breast, 32.22. Lauren Folkert (17) placed 3rd in the 100 Back, 59.76, 4th in the 200 Free, 1:56.50, 7th in the 200 Back, 2:08.50 and 15th in the 100 Free, 55.26. Alexa Resetar (17) placed 12th in the 100 Back, 1:02.07, 14th in the 50 Back, 29.05 and 15th in the 200 Back, 2:12.87. Miranda Shelley (18) placed 4th in the 200 Fly, 2:11.86 and 12th in the 100 Fly, 1:00.52.

The Freestyle relay team of the Buhas, Folkert and Brunett placed 2nd in the 400 relay, 3:37.98 and 3rd in the 200 relay, 1:38.78. Doepker, Resetar, Shelly and Annika Gidley placed 16th in the 200 Freestyle relay, 1:43.99. Shelly, Resetar, Doepker and Chao placed 11th in the 400 Freestyle relay, 3:48.14. Resetar, Shelly, Bradley and Sutherland placed 5th in the 800 Freestyle relay, 8:11.22. while Chao, Doepker, Gidley, and Buterakos placed 13th, 8:30.54. The Buhas, Doepker and Burnett placed 2nd in the 200 Medley Relay, 1:49.48, while Folkert, Resetar, Shelly and Gidley placed 10th, 1:54.31. Resetar, Borri, Shelly and Folkert placed 8th in the 400 Medley relay, 4:13.33.

15-and-Over Boys

Jack Kennedy (16) had four top sixteen finishes. He placed 4th in the 500 Free, 4:53.37, 7th in the 200 Free, 1:48.47, 11th in the 100 Fly, 54.37 and 14th in the 50 Fly, 25.00. Danny McNeece (16) placed 6th in the 50 Fly, 24.58 and the 200 Fly, 2:01.17. He placed 10th in the 100 Fly, 54.31. Christopher Szymchak (16) placed 2nd in the 50 Back, 25.10, the 100 Back, 53.10 and the 200 Back, 1:54.05. He placed 9th in the 50 Fly, 24.81, 10th in the 200 Free, 1:48.63 and 14th in the 50 Free, 22.63. Jake Wasko (16) placed 9th in the 50 Fly, 24.81 and 14th in the 50 Free, 22.63.

Cameron Whitfield (12) also proudly represented FFYS at the Zone meet. Eleven of the Stingrays will be traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina April 3-6 to compete at the 2013 YMCA Short Course Nationals meet.
