Farmington High Soccer Team's Sept. 26 Game Honors Beloved Parapro

The Falcons will raise funds for Buckets of Rain and the American Cancer Society in memory of Roxanne Mecham.

Farmington High bilingual parapro Roxanne Mecham touched many students' lives before her death in June, and the Falcon soccer team will play a special game Sept. 26 in her memory.

"Everybody on the team had a close connection with her," soccer tri-captain Jake Zervos, a senior, said. "We felt that this was a good thing to do for her."

As part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Soccer Night, players will wear special t-shirts and collect donations for Buckets of Rain, which turns blighted urban areas into gardens.

Zervos said Mecham, founder of the school's Interact International club and Interact Earth green team, had a real passion for Buckets of Rain. In 2012, Mecham received a grant from the Bosch Energy, Science and Technology (BEST) program to purchase supplies for an urban garden project in cooperation with Cass Community Social Services and the Detroit Rescue Mission.

Funds will also go to the American Cancer Society; Mecham had battled ovarian cancer for more than three years. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month.

In addition to contributions from those who attend the game, a portion of concession sales that night will be donated to the charities.

The Falcon varsity team takes on the West Bloomfield Lakers at 7 p.m.; the junior varsity game starts at 5:30 p.m.
