Farmington Native George David Named Pistons Assistant GM

The Bloomfield Hills resident attended Longacre and Power before graduating from Brother Rice in Birmingham.

Detroit Pistons new assistant general manager George David spent his early years growing up in Farmington. 

The Bloomfield Hills resident attended and Power Middle School (now ), before graduating from Brother Rice High School in Birmingham. He has been with the Pistons for 15 years. 

"I've kind of moved up through the organization," said David, who got started as the team's video coordinator under former head coach Doug Collins. "It's a little unusual in professional sports to stay with one team."

Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars said David will do "a great job" in the position. 

“George has played a significant role for our basketball operations team in coordinating our draft preparation, scouting, free agent analysis and administration," he said.

David said he now oversees all scouting, domestic and international, deals with free agency issues, handles administrative issues and "pretty much every aspect to make sure everything runs smoothly." 

He said he has stayed with the Pistons because the team has been so successful, but that's not the only reason. "This is also an organization that has treated their people very well. I've had the chance to work with some very good basketball over the years." 

David was previously the club’s Director of Player Personnel, after being promoted from Director of Scouting in August 2002.

Playing a key role in draft preparation over the last 10 years, David has assisted Dumars and the basketball staff with its selections of Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell, Amir Johnson, Rodney Stuckey, Arron Afflalo, Austin Daye, Jonas Jerebko, Greg Monroe, Brandon Knight, Kyle Singler and 2012 selections Andre Drummond, Khris Middleton and Kim English.

A 1996 graduate of Indiana University, David served as a student assistant under legendary coach Bob Knight from 1992-1996.
