Harrison High Swimmer Marina Borri Shines at National YMCA Championship

Farmington team member places eighth in breaststroke at North Carolina meet.

A varsity star from the Harrison Hawks, 17-year-old senior Marina Borri, scored the only points for the Stingrays team at a four-day national swimming meet in Greensboro, NC.

She finished eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke, earning 15 points to put her YMCA group in 61st place among 100 teams. The YMCA Short-Course National Championship ended Thursday.

The student is the daughter of Maria and Joseph Borri of Farmington. Her 14-year-old sister Julia swims for the Stingrays' regional zone team.

Among other Metro Detroit teams, a standout was 16-year-old Dakota High swimmer Marah Pugh of Macomb Township. Competing for the Macomb Family YMCA Marlins, she earned points each day.

Her best race came Thursday afternoon with a second-place swim in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She earlier finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle and fourth in two other events -- 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley.

Pugh's points at the Greensboro Aquatic Center were the only ones tallied by her Mount Clemens team, which finished in 58th place.

The Greater Flint YMCA led among Michigan teams, winding up in 19th place with 182 points.

The Birmingham Blue Dolphins earned 33 points from two events for 49th place. That YMCA's 200-yard freestyle relay team finished seventh Thursday, scoring all but one of the points.

Michigan's 16 entrants also included South Oakland Family YMCA (Royal Oak), the North Oakland Family YMCA (Auburn Hills), the Livonia Family YMCA and the Ann Arbor YMCA.
