Harrison High Takes Pom Title

Local teams place well in state competition.

pom pon coach Stacy Sheaffer had no voice left after Saturday's state competition. What she and her team did have was a state title.

The 32nd annual state event drew 59 teams who competed throughout the day at Eastern Michigan State University, in eight categories. Harrison placed first in Class A Division II, with 417.5 points.

"The girls really focused hard over the last two weeks and it showed at every practice. When we would give someone a correction, the girl would fix it right away," Sheaffer said via e-mail.

She said the girls prepared by watching tapes from last year of the teams they wanted to look like. "We had a ton of long practices over the last three weeks, and it just all came together for us," she added.

Classes are based on the size of the school. , Harrison, and are all in Class A. In regional competition, schools qualify to be in either Class A (sometimes called Class A Division 1) or Class A Division 2. Farmington and Mercy qualified for Class A this year, while North Farmington and Harrison both qualified for Class A Division 2. Scoring more than 80 points at regionals puts a team in Class A; teams scoring below that mark are in Division 2.

Farmington's varsity squad placed 6th in Class A with 448 points out of 510 possible, and Farmington junior varsity (JV) placed 5th with 406 points. North Farmington placed 5th in Class A Divison II with 391 points, and North Farmington JV took 3rd their division II competition, with 351.5 points. Mercy's Varsity squad, competing in Class A, placed 9th, with 429 points.
