North Farmington Golfer Qualifies for States

Raiders miss as a team, but Kollin makes the cut.

WIXOM — The rain held off Thursday, making for a nice, breezy day at Lyon Oaks Golf Course.

Unfortunately, it didn’t help , which was six strokes off qualifying for the Division 1 state finals.

The bright spot for the Raiders, though, was the performance of junior Max Kollin, who shot a 1-over par 73 and earned a trip to the finals as an individual.

“I’m hoping I can post a good finish,” Kollin said.

Birmingham Brother Rice won the regional Thursday with a team score of 293. The Warriors had two players finish in the top five.

Detroit Catholic Central was second with a 301 and Pinckney was third with a 303. The Raiders were fourth with a 309. Only the top three teams qualify for states.

“It’s very disappointing,” North Farmington coach Bruce Sutton said. “That sums it up. We’re happy Max qualified, but the team deserved it. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.”

Sutton said his team’s average for the season is about 310, but recently the boys have been shooting closer to 300.

“We just didn’t shoot the numbers,” Sutton said. “We left too many strokes out there.”

Rounding out the scoring for North Farmington were: Matt Coursen with a 78, and Nick Williams and Blake Burnett with 79s.

’s Jimmy Patterson missed qualifying as an individual by one stroke, shooting a 77.

Birmingham Seaholm’s Francesco Ruffino was the medalist, posting a 3-under 69. He qualified as an individual, as did Northville’s Nick Zanotti, with a 76. The top three individuals not on qualifying teams also advance to states.

As a team, Farmington tied for 10th with a score of 333. Austin LeGaut and Matt Goldi shot 83s and Nick Hefferon and Kevin Pachuta both shot 88s.

Farmington Hills Harrison's Anthony Serafa competed as an individual and shot an 83.
