North Farmington Track and Field Outruns Seaholm

The North Farmington boys and girls track and field teams both outscored Seaholm in an away meet on Tuesday.

Neither rain nor wind could stop the on Tuesday, as they outlasted the Birmingham Seaholm Maples on both the boys and girls sides.

Both teams struggled a little more with the Oxford Wildcats.

The Raider boys beat Seaholm 72-56, but lost to Oxford 100-28.

Coach Jeff Simpson said the day was set up to be a tough one due to injuries, but his team pulled through.

“For being short-handed, we knew we needed to run well against Seaholm,” Simpson said. “We were scrambling a little bit and just told the rest of our kids to step up.”

The scrambling may have made things more difficult, but Simpson called it a learning experience.

“We have to get in better shape and take care of ourselves and get healthy for our stretch run here in the next couple weeks,” he said.

Despite the loss, members of the Maples boys’ team had exceptional days. Jack Howard of Seaholm won three of his events, the 1600-meter run, 800-meter run and the 3200-meter run.

Fellow Maples Max Gomez and Mark Bennett rounded out the 1600, placing second and third respectively. The trio also swept the 3200, with Bennett coming in second and Gomez following closely behind in third. Gomez placed second in the 800-meter run, as well.

“We saw some awesome times,” said Seaholm boys coach David Hamway.  “All-in-all we ran really competitive against North Farmington.”

In the girls’ events, North Farmington achieved a 76-52 victory over Seaholm and tied Oxford at 64.

“We knew the meet would be very competitive today, and the girls came through for us,” North Farmington coach Bill Pinnell said. “We knew going in that both the meets were going to be very close.”

Pinnell said the cold weather was worse for the spectators than for his runners, who broke many of their personal-best records.

“I think we did good overall,” said Raider Asha McKinney. “We ran better than we usually do in the cold.”

Her teammate Tamara Donaldson thinks the determination and love of track helped her team to stay focused.

“When you take stuff seriously you actually get things done,” Donaldson said. “We, as a team, we get things done.”

The Lady Raiders won the 4 x 200-meter relay, 100-meter hurdles, 4 x 100-meter relay, the 400-meter dash, the shot put and the 200-meter dash events.

Girls will be competing at the John Glenn Rocket Relays at John Glenn High School on Friday. The boys will on the road again at Brother Rice on Saturday.

Correction: The Raider girls team tied score with Oxford was incorrectly reported. The teams tied at 64.
