UPDATE: With Thursday night's 3-0 win over the Oakland A's, the Detroit Tigers move on and will now face the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night in Game 1 of the ALCS.
If you’re a Detroit Tigers fan you’re figuring history is on your side. If you root for the Oakland A’s you’re figuring the streak has to end sometime and Thursday is as good a night as any.
If you’re any kind of baseball fan you are in for a treat as the A’s host the Tigers at O.co Coliseum in a do-or-die game five of the 2013 American League Division Series.

The game pits cagey veteran Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander against A’s rookie phenom Sonny Gray. It was Verlander and Gray who pitched seven and eight scoreless innings respectively in Game 2 of the series.
Last year, Verlander pitched a complete game shutout against the A’s in the 2012 ALDS Game 5. The A’s are 0-5 in ALDS Game 5s. Verlander has three post season starts against the A’s in the past two years and has yielded a total of one run in his 23 innings pitched.
The winner goes on to play Boston for the pennant and the right to represent the American League in the World Series.
