South Farmington Leagues Celebrate Opening Day

Hundreds of baseball and softball players turn out at Shiawassee Park.

South Farmington Baseball and Softball teams celebrated their opening day Saturday, starting with a parade from to .

The field ceremony included singing of the National Anthem by Miss Farmington Jenny Fernandez, and an appearance by the Detroit Tigers' mascot, PAWS.

The Rams softball team and the Red Sox baseball team took home top honors for their parade floats; both teams will attend a Detroit Tigers baseball game as their prize. 14U league umpire David Carter, who was not present, was named this year's Umpire of the Year.

Volunteer Steve Fitzpatrick, who started with the league as a player at age 8 and an umpire at age 13, has been with South Farmington for 27 years. His mother, Roxanne, was a league commissioner.

A Redford Union teacher, Steve Fitzpatrick said his long history with South Farmington is a tribute to his mother's involvement, and "It's something I really like and appreciate. I teach, and kids are near and dear to me."

Opening day continued Saturday afternoon, with 28 games played on fields in Farmington and Farmington Hills. For information about the league, visit sfbi.org.
