The Real B/S Podcast with Ben and Steve- Episode 8

Once a week my friend Ben and I record our Real B/S Podcast. We discuss everything from entertainment to politics and more. Here are some highlights from our latest podcast - Episode 8

Once a week I sit down with my friend Ben and we record our Real BS Podcast where we discuss everything from entertainment news to politics and real life.  In our latest installment (Episode 8) we discuss the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, Gun Control, the Chick-Fil-A controversy, The Dark Knight Rises, the approval rating of Congress and more!  This blog recaps some of what we talked about but I recommend listening to our podcast at www.therealbspodcast.wordpress.com for a more in-depth look.

I had recently headed Up North for a weekend and hit some of the small towns that I’ve neglected to travel to such as Petoskey and Boyne City.  While they are cute and fun to walk around in, they all seem to be similar.  I’m not sure how many people purchase a $1,000 bronze statue of something that resembles a robot or a bee holding a flower.  How many Life is Good shirts does one person need?

In light of the Aurora, Colorado shooting, we discussed how gun lobbyist and politicians don’t quite seem to make sense.  Although we believe in people’s right to own a gun we can’t understand the reasoning behind an assault rifle.  A rifle for hunting – we understand, but owning thousands of rounds doesn’t seem safe.  Where do you live and who are you protecting yourself from in that situation?  Also, there has been talk that if there were people in the theater with guns to defend themselves then the massacre would have had greater numbers.  Only the highest trained marksman might have been able to take out the shooter; remember, it was in the midst of a movie in a dark theater, there was tear gas, people screaming and the shooter was in full body armor.  If people “defended” themselves, it’s likely that more innocent people would’ve been shot.  Again, we believe in the right to own guns but when debating it, people don’t seem to think it all through.

In regards to the shooting, we also discussed how “if it bleeds, it leads” in the news and how there is such a rush to get information out that often times it is incorrect information and by the time the truth comes to light it has been months and no one cares about the truth.  The problem is that many people will still only know the initial, incorrect information.

And is Congress so bad that people have a higher approval rating of the airline industry over Congress?  Yes!  I think that Congress’s approval rating is so low due to partisanship.  Like when Nixon ran over 40 years ago, he ran for the silent majority.  Right now, Congress is so polarized that people who are middle-left or middle-right is so few that we are only being bombarded with the 10-15% of the crazy people on both sides.  It seems that politicians are more apt to try to win the argument than compromise because compromising may be perceived as weakness.  Therefore we are stuck in a stalemate.
