Marshmallow Fly and Fry Draws 1,500 to Heritage Park in Farmington Hills

Kids flock to a Farmington Hills Fire ladder truck to grab marshmallows, and some showed the true spirit of sharing.

After Farmington Hills firefighter John Harshbarger had tossed all of the marshmallows from the top of a fire truck ladder during Tuesday's Marshamallow Fly and Fry at , some kids walked away empty-handed.

Lt. Mike Kish said he asked whether those who had would share with those who didn't, and a few kids stepped up. Among them were Kerry Jackson II, 9, and David James, 9, both students at Highmeadow Common Campus in Farmington Hills.

"I wanted to be nice, because some of the kids were crying," Kerry said.

The marshmallows were valuable, because children turned them in for prizes. Families were also able to purchase hot dogs and marshmallows to roast over coals in an open pit.

Members of Girl Scout Troop 30167 arrived a little late, but could probably be excused – they traveled from Sterling Heights. Leaders said they brought the girls because the event sounded like a lot of fun.

"I thought it was really cool they were throwing the marshmallows from up on a ladder," 10-year-old Emily Lecea said.

"It's raining marshmallows!" Megan Modrak, 11, chimed in.

Recreation superintendent Bryan Farmer said the city created the Fly and Fry 13 years ago, to offer a greater number of free programs for families.

"We noticed that we needed to some more family events in Farmington Hills," he said. "We decided to mock the Wayne County marshmallow drop. We couldn't fly a helicopter over here because of safety, so we talked to our fire department and they partnered up with us."

He estimated about 1,500 people attended the event, which ran from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
