Avonelle Slagle Honored with Golden Oldie Award

The award recognizes senior citizens age 80 and older whose volunteer work significantly improves the lives of others.

Farmington Hills resident Avonelle Slagle, 87, was the recent recipient of the annual Golden Oldie Award presented by Liz Smith, the former president of the Detroit Rotary Club.

The Golden Oldies Awards recognize seniors 80 years old or better who volunteer for community organizations and make a significant impact on the lives of others. Dr. Samuel D. Harris founded the Golden Oldies Awards program in 1989, in collaboration with the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit and the Rotary Club of Detroit.

For the past 28 years, Avonelle Slagle has volunteered for the city of Farmington Hills Center for Active Adults. Her passion is making sure that seniors and the homebound are cared for and have enough to eat. She packs meals for the Meals on Wheels program 30 hours each month.

Slagle also supports the Center for Active Adults lunch program, baking pies for fundraisers, serving lunch to seniors, delivering meals to an assisted living facility, and helping seniors enroll in the lunch program.

When other volunteers have difficulty fulfilling their program obligations, the staff often calls on Slagle to fill in, which she generally does, even during the worst possible winter weather.
