Farmington American Legion Post Hosts Homeless Vets

Groves-Walker Post #346 and its Auxiliary feed 80 residents of the Michigan Veterans Foundation Detroit Veterans Center.

Auxiliary member Marian Belaire knows a good idea when she sees one.

When the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Wixom, where she lives, provided a hot meal for homeless veterans from a Detroit shelter, Belaire decided to get the Farmington group involved as well.

"I thought, why can't we do that here?" she said. "We have the room."

On Saturday at noon, 80 service veterans gathered in the club room at the Farmington post for a hot meal. In addition, Post Commander Jared Lott presented the Michigan Veterans Foundation Detroit Veterans Center with a $200 donation.

"We know it's a small token, but hopefully, it can be used to help someone in need," Lott said.

"It takes real dollars to solve problems," Veterans Center executive director Tyrone Chatman said. "For us it's a no-brainer. We're going to take care of the men and women who take care of this country."
