Farmington-Farmington Hills Relay for Life Event Features Moving Luminaria Ceremony

During this weekend's , a special ceremony will recognize both those lost to the disease and those who represent hope for the future – our cancer survivors.

After darkness falls on Saturday, hundreds of candles illuminate the way during the Relay for Life of Farmington/Farmington Hills’s Luminaria Ceremony, which will be held at 10 p.m. in . 

As Shannon Trent, a Relay for Life volunteer coordinator, explains: 

Each luminaria bears the name of someone who has battled cancer. For those taken from us, this is the time when we find comfort in realizing that no one who we have truly loved is ever lost. By placing their names on the luminaria bags we memorialize the love for them which we continue to carry in our hearts. You can decorate your own Luminaria bag for at $10 donation. Luminaria bags are available online at relayforlife.org/farmingtonmi, from any team, at , or in downtown Farmington.

For those who have defeated the disease, there is no truer symbol of the American Cancer Society’s mission than the cancer survivor. Their spirit and hope, their triumph and tears, as represented by the names we place on these flickering tributes, guide us in our quest for a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
