Farmington Hills Runners Set Sights on Top Fundraising Goal

Keith and Lynn Lerner will participate in Saturday's Run for the Hills, which benefits Special Olympics.

Keith and Lynn Lerner have been running wind sprints and four to six miles every other day, training for in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

The siblings—Keith is 13, Lynn 11—hope to finish well in the race. Although Keith didn't run in 2010, Lynn was first in her group last year and got "awesome running socks."

But they're working toward another goal, too. The event raises funds for Special Olympics in Oakland County.

"I like knowing it's raising money for people with special needs and lets them do things we can do every day," said Lynn, who was last year's top fundraiser at $1,035.

"It's helping people," Keith added. "It makes them feel better."

The Lerners have raised $900 so far, which leaves them a little short of their goal. They said they've been doing the fundraising together, asking friends and family to help. Their father, Richard Lerner, has helped by sending out email blasts.

Keith and Lynn got started running at last year's Founders Festival Run in July, because their soccer club entered the race. It's a hobby they've come to appreciate.

"It makes you feel good about yourself that you accomplish something," Lynn said.

For Keith, "It's a way to get rid of excess energy."
