Harrison Think Pink Club Donates $4K to Karmanos

Students designated their donation to a fund that helps cancer patients and their families with expenses during treatment.

Harrison High School's Think Pink Club during the past two years has sold pink donuts, ribbons, smoothies, cookies and more to raise $4,000 that has been donated to the Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit

Members recently delivered a check to the facility. The club's mission is to not only raise funds for cancer research, but to raise awareness of the disease. Events sponsored include a Breast Cancer Awareness Week, held in October each year, and a Pink Out during Harrison's annual Charity Week.

The group also supports Relay for Life, held at Shiawassee Park in Farmington.

Think Pink Club members chose Karmanos Cancer Center because of its reputation as a comprehensive cancer center and the idea of helping out those close to home. In meeting with Karmanos representative Katy Kaliszewski, the students chose to designate their donation to the Jessie Bernard Patient Support Fund, which assists patients and their families in meeting financial obligations with temporary assistance for needs like transportation and payment of utility bills.
