NAMI Walk for Minds Planned at OCC Orchard Ridge in Farmington Hills

The 5K walk raises funds and awareness for mental health programs in Michigan.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness in Michigan (NAMI Michigan) will hold the 8th annual NAMI Walk on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge Campus, 27055 Orchard Lake Rd. in Farmington Hills.

According to a press release, registration for the nationwide fundraising and mental health awareness 5K walk begins at 10 a.m., with the official start at noon, rain or shine.

“NAMI members are volunteers whose mission is to provide help to people with serious mental and emotional illnesses and their families,” Linda Burghardt, Executive Director of NAMI Michigan, said. “The goals of the walk are to raise money to promote our mission and to increase public awareness of these conditions by providing NAMI signature programs.”

The walk will raise thousands of dollars for NAMI and the mental health services it provides to families across the state. All the funds collected by walkers will be used to fund support, education, research and advocacy in Michigan involving schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe anxiety disorders.

Registration for the NAMI Walk is free, but fundraising is encouraged. Companies, organizations and families may organize teams to take part in the walk.
