Speaker Shares Local Resources for Children with Cancer

This Farmington-Farmington Hills Optimist Club meeting is open to the public, free of charge.

The Farmington-Farmington Hills Optimist Club is hosting an information program on childhood cancers on Wednesday, June 22, 7 p.m. at the in Farmington Hills.

Guest speaker Jim Walker, District Chairman for Optimist International Childhood Cancer Campaign, will discuss local programs and assistance available to children with this challenging disease. Admission is free, guests are welcome and a light dinner will be served.

Each year, more than 12,000 children and teenagers will be diagnosed with cancer, and one in 330 Americans develops cancer before the age of 20. Optimist Clubs across the country are working to build awareness of the disease, provide assistance to childhood cancer patients and their families and supporting research to find a cure.

Each year, the Farmington-Farmington Hills Optimist Club sponsors children at Camp Casey, a local horseback riding program for children with cancer.

The club also sponsors youth-oriented programs throughout the year, including an Essay Contest, Oratorical Contest, Leadership Awards, Junior Golf Tournament, Junior Optimist service clubs and more. On the fourth Wednesday of each month, the Club sponsors public meeting at the Costick Activities Center with a guest speaker on a topic relevant to their creed, “Bringing out the best in kids.”
